Joop van Bennekom

From 1975 to 1979, Joop studied at the renowned Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, one of Europe's most influential art institutions, where he developed his distinctive artistic voice alongside notable figures of the modern art scene. Working exclusively in oil, Joop is best known for his compelling portraits—intimate, expressive, and deeply human. His subjects reveal a wide spectrum of emotion: from quiet melancholy to subtle humor, each face carrying its own story. Encounters linger with him; people he meets are remembered, absorbed, and ultimately reimagined on canvas. Alongside portraiture, Joop creates finely observed still lifes, executed with remarkable precision and sensitivity. His mastery is equally evident in his backgrounds, where atmosphere and depth become an essential part of the narrative, enriching the overall composition. A particular passion for birds runs through his work. Studying them closely, he captures their presence with both accuracy and affection, translating their character into painterly form.
